Located in West Iceland, Snæfellsjökull is a glacier-capped stratovolcano that dates back over 700 000 years. The highest point reaches 1446 metres and visitors can hike up to the saddle that is situated close to the summit. In order to reach the summit, ice climbing is required. The stratovolcano was made famous for its mention in the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) in which the volcano is used as the entrance to the centre of the earth.
