The coast of Easter Island is almost entirely composed of rugged volcanic rocks, but for two sand beaches – one of which is Anakena, an idyllic bay of temperate, crystal clear water fringed by golden sand. Just behind the beach are two separate ahu (stone platforms on which the moai stand), one composed of six separate moai (statues) and the other of a single figure. Several small stalls on the beach sell snacks and drinks.
