Aït Ben Haddou is a historic fortified ksar in Morocco's Ounila Valley, on the southern slopes of the High Atlas in Ouarzazate Province. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, it is a striking ensemble of earthen buildings, defensive walls and towers that showcases the traditional architecture of southern Morocco. Visitors can wander through its narrow lanes and explore the compact settlement, climbing towards the former granary at the summit for views across the surrounding landscape. The site's distinctive earthen architecture, ochre tones and dramatic mountain setting make it one of Morocco's best-known heritage sites. Aït Ben Haddou also offers a glimpse into the region's historic caravan trade, having stood along an ancient commercial route linking Marrakesh with the Sahara and sub-Saharan Africa.
