Set on the shores of Lake Tarawera, Mount Tarawera is a volcano located a 15-minute drive away from Rotorua. Before the eruption on June 10, 1886, the volcano was a burial ground of the remains of the indigenous Maori people - the leaders were buried at the summit while the rest were entombed at the volcano's base. Visitors can enjoy a guided walk along the mountain’s trails leading up to the crater.
