Strewn with the striking shapes of Acacia trees and the bright red blooms of aloes, Mokopane is a small town in the centre of the Waterberg, roughly two hours northeast of Pretoria. The bushveld village, scattered with citrus farms, makes an idyllic stop on the route towards Botswana, Zimbabwe and the Kruger National Park, and its distinct multi-culturalism (with influences from the Ndebele, Pedi, Sotho, Afrikaans and English people) gives it a unique character. The area boasts an abundance of game farms, as well as a Biodiversity Centre where visitors can see black rhino, tsessebe, and roan antelope, among other rare species. An array of outdoor sports, such as hiking, mountain biking, and angling, are on offer. Visit a wealth of heritage sites, including the historic and archaeologically significant Makapansgat Caves, the fascinating Arend Dieperink Museum, and numerous San rock paintings.
