A dramatic volcanic caldera, encircled by forested cliffs rising 300 metres high, the Empakaai Crater in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area is dominated by a striking turquoise alkaline lake, covering over 75% of the crater and drawing flamingos and waterbirds. Perched at an altitude of 2,590–3,200 metres, the crater is often shrouded in mist. Hiking reveals rich vegetation, buffaloes, monkeys, and diverse birdlife. Nearby attractions include Oldoinyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley, and Lake Natron, making Empakaai ideal for walking safaris and nature exploration.
