In northern Tanzania, near the Great Rift Valley, a striking volcanic cone rises to 2,962 metres. Known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, Ol Donyo Lengai is an active stratovolcano and the only one in the world to produce natrocarbonatite lava, which flows at relatively low temperatures. The surrounding landscape features vast savannahs, Lake Natron’s saline waters, and dramatic escarpments. Historically revered by the Maasai people, the volcano is both a cultural and geological marvel. Visitors can embark on challenging overnight treks to its summit, rewarded with sunrise views over the Rift Valley. The nearby Lake Natron area hosts flamingo breeding grounds, hot springs, and ancient hominid footprints preserved in volcanic ash. Basic campsites and eco-lodges in the region cater to adventurers, providing guided tours and transportation.
