Currency
The currency of Mozambique is the Metical (Meticais plural) MTZ. There is limited acceptance of credit cards at hotels and restaurants, as well as ATM machines in major towns only. However these are not reliable and a back up of hard currency is recommended.  USD and ZAR are commonly exchanged for local currency. Please note that the local currency has no value outside Mozambique.

Visa
Mozambique has approved the TOURISM VISA EXEMPTION entering Mozambique for some International citizens of the countries listed below:

 1) Canada; 2) Swiss Confederation; 3) United Arab Emirates; 4) State of Israel; 5) United States of America;  6) Russian Federation; 7) Japan; 8) Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; 9) Kingdom of Belgium; 10) Kingdom of Denmark; 11) Kingdom of Spain;  12) Kingdom of Norway; 13) Kingdom of Sweden; 14) Kingdom of the Netherlands; 15) United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland;  16) Republic of Korea; 17) Republic of Côte d’Ivoire; 18) Republic of Finland; 19) Republic of Indonesia; 20) Republic of Ireland; 21) Republic of Singapore; 22) Republic of Ghana; 23) Republic of Senegal; 24) Federal Republic of Germany; 25) Republic of France 26) Republic of Italy; 27) People’s Republic of China; 28) Republic of Portugal; 29) Republic of Ukraine.

The TOURISM VISA EXEMPTION allows for 30 days of stay, renewable to an additional 30 days.

Visa costs entering Mozambique:

Traveller covered by the VISA EXEMPTION regime who intends to enter Mozambique must pay a TAX FEE and the payment is CASH ONLY:

MZN 650 = USD 11 = ZAR 220 = EURO 10

SADC citizens do not need any entry visa

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a Regional Economic Community comprising 16 member States; Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, United Republic Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.  NO booking confirmation (Visa Letter) will be required.

International visitors - not listed in SADC or VISA EXEMPTION - CAN EASILY GET TOURISM VISA ON ARRIVAL at Vilanculos Airport.

The Tourism Visa applied on arrival in Mozambique is the BORDER VISA / VISTO DE FRONTERA, available for tourism purposes at the borders since 2017: it allows travellers to stay in Mozambique 30 days only, not renewable, 2 entries during the stay.

The BORDER VISA / VISTO DE FRONTERA cost is USD 50 per person and payment is CASH ONLY (USD / EURO / ZAR / MZN currencies are all accepted). Please note that credit card payment is NOT accepted, there are NO credit card facilities (POS) and there are NO ATM on arrival at Vilanculos Airport. NO booking confirmation (Visa Letter) will be required.

Here are the 29 countries needing a Mozambique official Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

These countries have enjoyed visa-free travel to Mozambique for up to 30 days (with a possible extension) since May 1, 2023. Now, their citizens need an ETA beforehand:

What a traveler still needs to show when they arrive in Mozambique:

Besides the approved ETA, the following will have to be presented:

• For Tourists:
  • A passport that's valid for at least 6 months after departure from Mozambique
  • Proof of where they will be staying.
  • Return flight ticket.
  • Proof that they have enough money for their trip (ie a recent bank statement).

Plan ahead to avoid problems at the border:

Mozambican authorities are serious about this new ETA requirement. No ETA means travelers won't be allowed in. Please ensure the following:

• Apply for the ETA at least 48 hours before the flight.
• Double-check that all passports will be valid for at least 6 months after departure from Mozambique.
• Keep a printed or digital copy of their ETA and all other important travel documents handy.

This new rule is part of a growing global trend where countries are using digital systems to screen travelers before they arrive. By making the arrival process more efficient, Mozambique hopes to make visits safer and more predictable for both travelers and border officials.

Internal Flights and Transfers
There are limited transfer options in Mozambique.

Self drive is an option in the very Southern coastal region, though roads away from the main highway are unlikely to be in good condition. The central and northern region roads are likely to be in bad condition.

All quality hotels and lodges will have an option for a road, boat or air transfer from the nearest airport.

There is a limited range of scheduled flights between Maputo and major cities and tourist destinations in Mozambique.
