Founded in 1986, Okavango Horse Safaris is one of Africa’s most renowned horseback safari operators, offering a truly immersive journey through the diverse landscapes of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Set within a vast private concession, the safari experience is as exclusive as it is adventurous. Guests ride through palm-dotted islands, floodplains, woodlands, and river channels encountering the Delta’s famed wildlife, prolific birdlife, and rich ecosystems in a way few ever do. With a maximum group size of eight riders, each safari is intimate, expertly guided, and crafted to deepen one’s understanding of the land and its rhythms.
Guests are based across two distinct camps, each situated in a unique ecological zone, offering varied scenery and wildlife encounters. Accommodation varies between the two camps; Kujwana, OHS’ permanent base camp is made up of large elevated tents with en-suite bathrooms, private verandas, and views across the Xudum river and floodplain. There is a lovely pool, welcoming living and bar area and raised dining room which makes the most of the views. At the fly camp guests will enjoy large, airy tents with en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds with premium linen and a mess tent complete with sofas and games.
The camps are unfenced, allowing for spontaneous wildlife encounters, while their strategic placement allows for seamless movement across the Delta, creating an expedition-style journey by horseback. Non-riders and larger groups can also be accommodated, with each guest receiving tailored attention and warm, genuine hospitality.
Days begin early with a long morning ride of 4 to 6 hours in the saddle navigating through herds of giraffe, buffalo, zebras and elephants. Afternoons offer a change of pace with activities such as mokoro excursions (traditional dugout canoes), game drives, guided walks, or a refreshing swim. On days when guests are moving to the fly camp a picnic lunch is served and guests can enjoy a siesta on a comfortable camp bed before continuing the ride for 2 hours to arrive at their destination. On stays of 10 nights or more a sleepout option is also available at OHS’ raised platforms.
With over 60 well-trained horses ranging from Thoroughbreds, Boerpeds to Anglo-Arabs, Okavango Horse Safaris blends equestrian excellence with world-class guiding to deliver an unforgettable, soul-stirring Delta adventure.
