Situated within the 30,000 hectare Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary on the eastern seaboard of Mozambique, Dugong Beach Lodge overlooks the pristine white beach sands and invitingly warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Although the lodge is on the mainland, being on the tip of a remote peninsula, the lodge captures a genuine island feel.
Ten tastefully decorated en-suite, airconditioned chalets and two two-bedroom villas all have superb sea views and direct beach access at low tide, down individual walkways from each chalet or villa. The chalets have private balconies and outdoor showers, whilst the villas have private plunge pools. Due to the significant extent of tidal changes characteristic of the Mozambique coastline, at high tide, the ocean laps up against the protective sea wall in front of all the rooms. The main lodge complex also boasts stunning ocean vistas and has a dining and lounge area, swimming pool and outdoor deck ideal for indulging in absolute relaxation.
The Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a wealth of marine wildlife including magnificent schools of fish species, dolphins and the elusive, endangered marine mammal, the dugong. Also referred to as the “sea cow”, these ancient creatures are not often seen but graze peacefully on sea grasses and other ocean plants that grow in shallow tropical waters. With both shallow and deep water reefs abounding off this region of the Mozambique coastline, the Sanctuary is home to dolphins, manta rays and leatherback turtles. Inhabitants of the deeper waters include marlin and barracuda. On the mainland, there are over 300 bird species including impressive flocks of flamingos and pelicans. A variety of plains game and smaller creatures also inhabit the Sanctuary.
Other than the non-motorised beach activities, nature drives and beach walks included at Dugong Beach Lodge, additional activities can be arranged at extra cost. These include scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
Airport Transfer Time: 30 to 45 minutes by boat
Note: Depending on tide levels, guests may be required to wade through shallow (up to knee deep) water to reach the lodge from the transfer boat
