Lake Tanganika, literally translated means “the great lake spreading out like a plain”. It is part of a series of lakes called the African Great lakes, which form the rift valley lakes in and around the East African Rift. David Livingstone referred to the lake “ as an area of unsurpassed beauty” and once you set eyes on its crystal clear waters you will feel what make this place so unique.
This vast inland lake is the world’s second largest lake by volume and depth and is home to a great biodiversity. Its water area spreads into Zambia, Congo DR, Burundi and Tanzania. Although Zambia can only claim 7% of the lake’s surface area, Nsumbu National Park encompasses some 100 kilometres of the lake’s most pristine shoreline.
Similar to Lake Malawi this beautiful stretch of water is home to a large number of fish species including the colourful ciclids, making it a perfect destination for angling and fishing. Another reason for its popularity is the year round water temparture of mild 24 to 26 degrees celcius, ideal for all water based activities such a snorkelling and scuba diving.
