Majete Wildlife Reserve is situated in the lower Shire valley in the South West of Malawi.Majete is a very special wildlife reserve, seen by few visitors to Malawi. Discovering its many species of fauna and flora is something akin to a real adventure. This is not a place where you will follow a trail of safari vehicles around a well-trodden circuit, ticking animals off a list.
Majete is rich in wildlife and you will come across many species of mammals and birds. Elephants roam the forest and buffalo nestle in the deep shade. In the more open woodlands you can expect to see eland, sable antelope, zebra and Lichtenstein's hartebeest. Africa's northernmost population of Nyala pick their way through the thickets that fringe the park's waterways and are surprisingly relaxed in the presence of vehicles.
The local population of black rhino is thriving once more and - though elusive - you may be rewarded with a sighting if you are patient, particularly during the dry season when they head for the waterholes.
The reserve boasts numerous species of birds, some of which are rather special. There is a breeding population of Rock Pratincole that inhabits rocky islands in the Shire River and you'll find Pels Fishing Owl in the riparian forest of the river systems. Other thrilling sights for birders include Arnotts' chat, the White-breasted Cuckooshrike and Racket-tailed Rollers.
With the reintroduction of lions & leopards completed in 2011 & 2012, Majete is once again a Big Five reserve.
