Shoebill Camp is situated on a tree island in the Bangweulu Wetlands. Water levels vary throughout the year thus changing the face of this amazing area. It is home to a prolific amount of bird life including the sought-after Shoebill Storks as well as a rare antelope species the black lechwe.

Shoebill Island Camp offers accommodation in five safari tents under thatch roofs and three reed cottages, each with and en-suite bucket shower and flush toilet. There is a reed breakfast room and separate dining room. The island has panoramic views over the swamps and gets its name from the Shoebill Stork, which are usually in reach of the camp depending on the season.

Activities vary with water levels throughout the year. Early in the year much of the area is inaccessible and the camp is reached by boat. From March to May, the lodge focuses on boating activities. Then, as the water levels in the floodplains recede, guests can enjoy day and night game drives and guided walks.

The Bangweulu Wetlands are divided into 3 main habitats: open water to the northwest (near Samfya), huge swamps in the middle and around the southern and eastern fringes and seasonally flooded grass plains. It is particularly this latter habitat and the swampy Lukulu River flowing through it, which are of interest to visitors. They support an incredible diversity of water birds and plains birds including the Shoebill Storks. They are also home the rare Black Lechwe – an attractive species found only in the Bangweulu. Shoebills are found from March to August and generally viewed best from canoe; September to November offers great birding but less likelihood of Shoebill sightings.

Bangweulu is a great draw for birdwatchers attracting a profusion of waterfowl. Wattled crane, Saddle-billed stork, Spur-winged goose, Sacred Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Black-crowned Night Heron, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Swamp Flycatcher, Pink- throated and Fulbourne’s Longclaw, Denham’s Bustard and numerous ducks live here. However, for the non birders, there is also a spectacular range of wildlife adapted to this wetland environment including elephant, buffalo, tsessebe, reedbuck, oribi, sitatunga and the black lechwe.
