Nestled amidst impressive miombo woodland tree species and riverine vegetation in a remote part of the South Luangwa National Park, Nkonzi Camp takes you back in time to the era of authentic, off-the-grid bush safaris. This rustic camp invites guests to immerse themselves in this truly wild experience, in a majestic and pristine area of the Park.
This intimate, owner-operated camp has only four safari tents, each featuring wooden framed beds with white cotton linen and a basic en-suite bathroom with traditional bucket-shower and flush loo. Each tent also has a small outdoor seating area. One tent, designated the “honeymoon” tent, is graced with an additional seating area with Moroccan floor coverings, a daybed, large cushions and a shade sail. Meals are served in the well-shaded main camp area and weather permitting, a special Milky Way Braai (barbeque) dinner is served on the last night’s stay, in the seasonal riverbed adjacent to the camp. As the name suggests, the canopy of southern sky stars is a sight to behold in clear conditions.
Nkonzi Camp offers various set itineraries in which guests join in the same activities. A surcharge is applicable for nights booked outside of these set itineraries. The camp may also be booked on an exclusive use basis.
The only modern-day features of Nkonzi Camp are those helping to provide a minimal carbon footprint. The flush toilets are designed to minimise water usage, lighting is provided by solar power and a there is a small solar charging centre for camera batteries and cell phones. However there is no cell phone nor internet connectivity. A solar geyser heats water for the bucket showers, the buckets are delivered to each tent when required.
The South Luangwa National Park is famous for its beauty, diversity of game and exceptional bird life. A natural spring approximately 1km from the camp attracts a variety of wildlife. Game drives take guests along the Luwi River system and bush walks are conducted through the grassy plains and seasonal lagoons to the north of the camp. Game that frequents the area include elephants, buffalo, zebra as well as large and small predators.
