Wilderness Davison's

Highlights

  • Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's oldest and largest protected park. Roughly half the size of Belgium, the park includes a diverse mix of savannah habitats, including broadleaf woodlands, acacia scrub, grasslands and salt pans.
  • A true year-round destination. In summer, the famed Ngamo Plains near camp bristle with plains game, followed by their predators – including lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyenas. And in winter large herds of elephants and buffalos congregate to drink from the pumped waterholes across the private reserves, including in front of Davison’s.
  • Due to the ecological diversity and fertile ground in the south-eastern corner of Hwange, as well as year-round access to water, the area is a wildlife magnet.
  • Access to the equally abundant and adjacent Makalolo Private Wilderness Reserve means Wilderness guests have exclusive access to 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres) of land

Destination: Nestled under a dense grove of false mopane trees, Wilderness Davison's is located in the famed Linkwasha Concession – one of the most prolific wildlife areas in Hwange National Park. Named after the founder of Hwange National Park and its first warden, Ted Davison. Game drives and guided nature walks explore this private concession.

Experience: Davison’s is situated in south-eastern Hwange, where a tremendously rich and diverse environment, coupled with year-round availability of water, means the region teems with elephants, antelope and their ensuing predators.

Experience the birds on an early morning guided walk at Davison’s. Smell the petrichor, the unmistakable scent of wet African soil. Cruise off-the-beaten-track Hwange in search of big cats and rare antelope, or get a behind-the-scenes look at real life conservation with the Scorpion Anti-Poaching unit.

A fulfilling cultural encounter with local villagers rounds off this truly exceptional, and affordable, Hwange safari.

Purpose: As the concessionaire of the private Linkwasha and Makalolo areas in south-eastern Hwange National Park, we have created meaningful partnerships with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) and other conservation entities, as well as the local communities, in order to protect the wildlife and support the people that live in surrounding villages.

Wildlife: Hwange’s mix of different veld and landscape types means that game viewing is exceptionally productive year-round. Wildlife frequently encountered in our area includes lions, large herds of elephants, buffalos, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, giraffes, sable, blue wildebeest, impalas, waterbuck, and reedbuck. In summer, wildebeest, zebras and eland are seen in great numbers on the open plains, while in winter elephants congregate in enormous herds around the waterholes. Birdlife in the area is prolific, with some 400-plus species recorded.

Wilderness Davison's: Hidden within a treeline, this classic African safari camp, with nine bright and airy tents (including a family unit) span either side of the welcoming main area, which overlooks an open plain, and a waterhole which is a favourite drinking spot for elephant and buffalo.

The main area comprises a spacious lounge and dining area, leading onto an expansive deck with an open campfire area, perfect for convivial evening musings or star gazing.

The refreshing pool and its loungers are beautifully positioned for relaxation, while a small upper deck is an ideal location from which to watch wildlife at the waterhole.
