Cottar's 1920s Camp

Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp in the Mara recalls an era of luxury and quality, returning to the original spirit and essence of 'safari', reminiscent of a golden era of romance, professional guiding, adventure and elegance. It has a timeless unspoiled setting with sunset views stretching to distant horizons of the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti plains where game abounds. Calvin and Louise Cottar – fourth generation of a family with a rich safari heritage – established Cottar’s 1920s in the mid-nineties. The camp accommodates guests in authentic white canvas tents that are spacious and luxuriously furnished. Each tent consists of a main bedroom, an outdoor veranda, and a private en suite dressing room and bathroom. Guests can also enjoy a unique safari bath or safari shower, specially set up for them in the savannah! There are 11 luxurious tents in total: one unique honeymoon tent, six standard tents and four family tents. Family tents have living rooms with fireplaces. The camp spreads over 1km and the configuration of the camp ensures privacy for each tent, whether for honeymooners or families with young children. The camp has two main mess tent areas for fine dining, reading and relaxing, as well as a lovely pool and spa area where guests can enjoy optional massages after a game drive. Butlers are on stand-by to provide guests with discreet, yet attentive service. The location of the camp provides easy access to the Masai Mara national reserve which is only 1km away, and to cultural interactions with the local Maasai community.

Cottar’s is situated in the 7000 acre private Cottar's conservancy on Olderikesi group ranch is a unique wilderness area bordering the Serengeti Maasai Mara and Loliondo reserves. The area is largely untouched by tourism or development with no fences or man-made structures other than roads for hundreds of kilometers around. It offers exclusivity and privacy with a very low vehicle density and the added benefits of walks and day and night drives. The south east Maasai Mara where this conservancy is located, is where most of the Mara's rhino population occurs. There are also many lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other migratory wildlife. The terrain is varied with hills - which are great for walks to see Colobus monkeys, Verreaux eagles nesting on the cliffs, and possibly the rare Chandler's reedbuck on the hill tops. Cottar's conservancy on Olderikesi has some of the highest success rates of big five sightings in Kenya - although the focus is never on ‘ticking off’ the check list of species, but rather on the quality and privacy of the viewing, the interpretation of the sight, and ‘capturing the moment'.

Drawing on generations of safari experience, the Cottar family provides guests with the highest standard of personalized and professional guiding. Daily activities are tailored to ensure a unique safari program. All guides are highly qualified, and as an optional additional extra, exclusive-use of a safari vehicle can be reserved, and Calvin Cottar himself can be hired as your private guide. At Cottar’s 1920s dedicated and discrete staff, award-winning guides, an abundance of wildlife, and beautiful and romantic white canvas tents all add up to ensure a nostalgic, exclusive and luxurious safari experience.

Cottar’s Private Homestead offers alternative accommodation to guests that prefer absolute privacy. It is a luxuriously appointed exclusive-use Mara homestead, situated away from the main camp, with a dedicated staff of 8 which include a private safari guide and game drive vehicle. This contemporary African style house was designed by Calvin and Louise Cottar and built by hand using indigenous and eco-friendly materials. It has a breathtaking view onto the savannah plains and is set amidst a backdrop of the Olderikesi Hills. The house is over 10,000 square feet in size, and features a large living room, dining room, a magnificent viewing deck, and 5 en-suite bedrooms, all with stunning views. The house has internet access throughout, satellite TV and DVD, and is powered with electric and solar energy. A private 25m swimming pool sits in the grounds of the villa. Optional massages are available in the privacy of the house, and should they wish to do so, guests at the private homestead could make use of the Cottar's 1920s Camp boutique and other facilities.
