The DRC is a huge African country and has well publicized political and cultural problems. However these are in very isolated pockets of the country and sometimes in the major cities and you should take note of travel warnings put out by your government.
However for the traveller that can see past all this and appreciate that Virunga National Park has a well established infrastructure, well supported by the local communities and a gorilla trekking experience that is equal to any other available in Africa at half the price. Added to this is the incredible Mt Nyiragongo, all in all I think a destination well worth considering.
