Expert tips

Welgelegen is a small and intimate boutique hotel located in the residential suburb of Gardens near Cape Town’s city bowl. The hotel is set in a Victorian cul-de-sac at the foot of Table Mountain and with its beautiful historic façade it lives up to its name as a well- positioned urban sanctuary.

There are 13 luxurious, individually styled en-suite bedrooms spanning two Victorian houses. Welgelegen has been beautifully restored: the rooms are spacious, tastefully and elegantly decorated and include high ceilings typical of period homes. No comforts are spared and each room features air-conditioning, “green” amenities, satellite TV, tea and coffee facilities and Wi-Fi. Some rooms include an outside courtyard or small balcony/veranda area. The main house has a spacious sitting room and cosy library with a collection of eclectic African art on the walls. There is a grand breakfast room opening out onto a cobbled courtyard with a plunge pool and a small in-house therapy room offers massages, pedicures and manicures.

Welgelegen is a short walk from some of the city’s best local restaurants, bars, museums and boutique stores and a fifteen minute drive will get you to most of Cape Town’s major tourist attractions: the Table Mountain Cable-Car, Camps Bay, the V & A Waterfront and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Day 2: Cape Town

Duration: 9am to 2pm

So much about a country and a culture is expressed through its cuisine. In South Africa much of the cuisine is a home cuisine and to get a taste you really need to search hard! As such this tour aims to combine the history of our country and city through exploring the back streets to find the tastes that represent all of our rainbow nation. Today we walk the streets of Cape Town and experience its history, its people and its culinary delights. En route we stop to taste a mixture of traditional food, South African street food and to visit some artisanal foodie and coffee shops. This way you will enjoy a real taste of the Cape!

During our walk we will also taste some of the following items:

African Soul food: pap, samp & beans, a meat stew and vetkoek Falooda – a traditional Muslim Rose Milkshake

A Koesister – which is a traditional Cape Malay spicy doughnut “dhaltjies”/chilli bites and a Cape samosa

A gourmet bunny chow to get a little taste of our Indian Cuisine

Coffee from one of the micro artisan coffee roasters in the city (we can try at a couple of them if we have coffeeholics on tour!)

Artisan Chocolate made from pure unroasted cocoa beans and combined only with sugar – suitable for vegans!

Babotie pies – this is a modern take on our traditional Babotie dish which both our Cape Malay group and our white Afrikaner group refer to as their traditional dish

Milk Tart – traditionally Cape Malay and Afrikaans in its heritage

Visit Atlas Spices – the main spice shop where the Cape Malay community shop. Here you will have the opportunity to buy spices and

to taste Meebos – a local sweet made from dried apricots.

Boerewors – a traditional South Africa sausage traditionally cooked on a Braai (BBQ) (time dependent!)

Includes: City entrance fees, food tasting and transfers from local Cape Town hotels to and from venue.

Day 4: Cape Town

Enjoy a small group half day tour with uThando.

uThando South Africa is our chosen charity in South Africa and serves as an umbrella for a wide range of highly effective community projects across the country. In order to showcase these and also to offer a glimpse into the work being done to uplift the disadvantaged in South Africa, daily excursions are offered to visit the sprawling townships around Cape Town, with particular emphasis on at least three of the social development projects being funded through Uthando.

The uThando tours offer a unique and authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many millions of South Africans, while also illustrating the innovative and inspirational ways in which they are being handled by these marginalised and destitute communities. Very importantly, the projects are not treated as tourist attractions and the tours are designed in such a way as to educate, inform and inspire while also respecting the dignity and privacy of the people concerned. The projects are, after all, places where people live, work and in most cases, just survive.

A portion of the tour cost goes directly to uThando charities.

Includes: Donation to all projects visited.
