Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, the 3rd lighthouse to be built on the South African coast was commissioned on 1 March 1849. The lighthouse has a unique design that is based on the Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The original structure was declared unsafe in 1966 and was replaced with a lattice structure in 1968. The community was largely responsible for the restoration of the original structure and the lighthouse was inaugurated again on 25 March 1988 after having being out of service for 20 years.
