Mikeno Lodge is set in a hillside forest, about one and a half hour's drive from Goma. It is adjacent to the Virunga park HQ and a wonderful place to get to know more about what is happening in Virunga. The large stone and thatch bungalows are set inside the forest adorned with large fig trees and home to many primates and birds. The restaurant looks out over the forest, has a large welcoming fireplace and serves good food. Nature walks on the lodge trails are a great way to encounter the wildlife. Walks through the park operations and the local community can be arranged and are recommended. The Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage is also very close to Mikeno and well worth a sobering yet fascinating visit.
There is an abundance of forest birdlife, from large noisy Black-and-white Casqued Hornbills to understorey songsters like the Snowy-crowned Robin-chat. Tracking the resident Chimpanzees is a challenge but well worth the effort too. They are easily heard from the camp as well!
